Norwegian Breakaway Hull Art Debuted

Breakaway Hull Art by Peter Max
The people at NCL took a chance and had a preeminent American artist design the hull art for the new Norwegian Breakaway.  If you've been living in a travel cave, the Breakaway will be NCL's brand new ship sailing year-round from Manhattan.  This was the public's first look at what Norwegian is hoping will become a well-viewed piece of floating art, and it covers 40,000 square feet.  But is it a great look for a new vessel?

Muster Up! Ship Safety Taken Seriously or Going Overboard?

Find that muster station on your next cruise!
In the aftermath of Costa Concordia, cruise lines all over the world have been reviewing their safety standards and, more importantly, imposing new penalties for not taking those concern seriously.  This was the case on the Seabourn Sojurn, a luxury ship sailing the second of a three-leg voyage out of Lisbon last Saturday, as an elderly couple was debarked from the sailing after refusing to heed multiple announcements to attend an ongoing safety drill.

Travel Tech: DCL's Wave Phone

Now that the word is out that I have (finally) booked my first Disney Cruise after being on so many other lines, I have been exploring the amenities on board that are only offered by DCL and how they might affect my on-board experience.  The one that stands out the most (and believe me, there are a few that are cool, but that is another article!) is the wave phone system rolled out to all four Disney ships last year.

Why Disney? Part 1: Intro to Magic

80's Building at Pop Century Resort.  Picture courtesy Peter Giorgio

Those who know me know my Disney obsession well.  It was probably what led me into the travel industry in the first place, and started at or about age 6.  People simply shake their heads as I listen to Disney park music at home, read guidebooks as if they were best-selling novels, and put new editions of travelogues on reserve at the library (as if that many people were looking for them anyway).  I take in Disney blogs like other read The New York Times and fill my house with assorted Disneyania including my own personal Mickey ears.

If you consider a FastPass a form of payment for favors (or if you even know what that means!) you may be in my Disney dark-ride boat.  If not (or like some friends you think Disney is part of the EVIL EMPIRE), here is an intro to a new series of articles.  Over the next few posts, I'll try to go over some of the great things that Disney has to offer and why you might want to give it a try.  Start here, read on, and see what keeps me and people like me coming back again and again.

Is Cruising Safe?

I wasn't sure it was wise to comment on this at all, but so many people have asked about the Costa Concordia that I thought a quick article might be a good idea.  It is up to you whether you think cruising is the way to go.  The short answer to people who want my opinion is "Of course, and it is probably safer now than ever."

Travel Tech: Disney World Apps Part 1

Disney World Maps by VersaEdge Software
If you are anything like me, you have tethered yourself to a smart device of some sort, ad it goes everywhere with you.  Including on vacation.  Apps for these devices can be great traveling companions, especially at a place as internationally recognized as Walt Disney World.  With the vastness of the area (twice the size of Manhattan in area), it helps to have a great program to help you navigate rather than the paper maps people are frequently huddled over.

We're going to cover multiple apps, but today's focus is on Disney World Maps by VersaEdge Software.  It available on the iOS App Store (sorry Android devotees; your time will come) either free with ads or for the price of $2.99 ad-free.

Top Five Resons to Travel in 2012

As if you needed a reason to take a vacation, here are the OFFICIAL top five reasons to get away this year:

1. It's Cold Outside!
This guy got out of the cold, and he sure looks happy!
Although you can't tell yet here in New York, we are anticipating winter at some point this year.  There are plenty of warm-weather destinations, both land and sea, that you can visit year-round, including the Caribbean, Bermuda, and a ton of Mexico locales.  Of course, if you'd like a week in Tahiti instead, no one here will dissuade you...
